The Obama team has already commented on the above image.  In their opinion: “The New Yorker may think … that their cover is a satirical lampoon of the caricature Senator Obama’s right-wing critics have tried to create, but most readers will see it as tasteless and offensive. And we agree.” 
As far as I’m concerned, this is nothing more than a very clever caricature.  I think that it captures the more comical aspects of the right-wing attack on Obama’s identity.  I also happen to think that the New Yorker’s savvy readers are smart enough to recognize satire when they see it.  Then again, I have always seen race and religion as fair game for the messy business of ridiculing stereotypes.
