if Obama were president…

If Obama is elected president, there will be very few substantial changes. The intensity of his message does little to change the fact that there is simply too much political inertia to overcome, and too many realities that can’t be wished away.

There are a lot of disillusioned voters who are desperate for a charismatic leader to deliver them from evil. The Obama campaign is riding high on their unbridled passions, but at some point, I suspect, the wave will come crashing down on the hardened shores of partisan bickering and fiscal constraints.

Make no mistake: Obama is as worthy a politician as any I have ever seen. He stands testament to all that which is worth celebrating about American democracy. At the same time, however, I think we have lost sight of the fact that he is only human.
