an open letter to Mills

Mills,

On behalf of myself and Rabsteen, I would like to draw your attention to one of your previous posts in order to call bullshit on your unfortunate use of the word “illumine.”  [as in, “the novel will always illumine more than the essay”].  We view any instantiation of this word as a direct affront to the sensibilities of the Internet and hope that, in future, no such indiscretions shall occur on your otherwise outstanding blog.

Now, as for whether or not the novel “illumines” [sigh] more than the essay,” I think the question is something of a red herring.  The answer is as follows:  Sometimes, maybe, it depends.  This, as it turns out, is the proper answer to a good many of life’s more pressing questions, such as, Is there a God?, Is this the proper spelling of Kierkegaard’s last name?, and Is it OK to wear white pants after Labor Day?

But I digress.  What I hope we can all take away from this email is that only fireflies can illumine, and we are not fireflies.

Best,

Sean
