the shooting
I don’t think it’s accurate to say that women “just happened” to be the recipient of his ire. Misogyny is cultivated in our society. It is rewarded and encouraged and normalized. Men are taught to feel entitled and they are taught to get angry at women when women don’t fulfill their expectations. Nothing accidental about this.
Yes. This.
Our society told this man what he deserved. And our society told this man that certain methods in obtaining it are acceptable or even encouraged.
Our society tells men that women exist for men’s purposes. Our society tells men that violence is an acceptable means of achieving their goals, asserting their dominance, establishing their identity.
As a man, I totally agree with all of these claims. In fact, I spend most of my day rocking back and forth in the fetal position, hoping I don’t kill women. But what recourse do I have? Society made me into this man, and now (barring an expensive trip to Thailand), I’m stuck this way!
…fuck off.
This is exactly the type of comment that I would expect an immature man to make. With every shooting the evidence continues to accumulate: Men are responsible for more than their fair share of the evil shit that goes on in the world. Anyone that would even debate this seemingly obvious point has forfeited their right to join the discussion. We need to work on finding solutions to the myriad problems that are associated with a dysfunctional construct of masculinity—not crack jokes.
