When we’re poor, Karelis argues, our economic worldview is shaped by deprivation, and we see the world around us not in terms of goods to be consumed but as problems to be alleviated. This is where the bee stings come in: A person with one bee sting is highly motivated to get it treated. But a person with multiple bee stings does not have much incentive to get one sting treated, because the others will still throb. The more of a painful or undesirable thing one has (i.e. the poorer one is) the less likely one is to do anything about any one problem. Poverty is less a matter of having few goods than having lots of problems. — The sting of poverty - The Boston Globe (via rabsteen)
We’ll leave aside, for the moment, the fact that you were tweeting while mum did all the heavy lifting, and just say congratulations! My second daughter, born earlier today.
I just stood at the top of the bed and kept my fool mouth shut. The nurses get to run the show—not the husband who got everyone into this mess in the first place. It has been one helluva day and god bless the strength of my wife.

Anybody who thinks it’s “safe” to be gay because it’s The 21st Century or because Will & Grace ran for 7 years is so fucking full of shit it’s coming out their ears. It used to be kind of a joke that you’d be safe as long as you stuck to the larger cities in any particular state, but that is a huge misconception in The 21st Century. My own city has seen a couple of bashings lately. It’s happening in San Francisco, Vancouver, Portland, Seattle… you search for this stuff and it just goes on and on. And for what gets reported, there’s probably 10 times as much which doesn’t.
I’m not sure we’ll ever tip the scales. Public opinion is one thing, but the more accepted we become, the more that fringe groups will hit, hate and murder us. Religious extremism is on the rise throughout the entire world, and it is, if not the source of hatred for us, the excuse which allows it.
I don’t mean to sound or be paranoid, but it rarely becomes a story that somebody fought back during a gay bashing and won. I don’t know about you, but I was bashed enough as a child that I fear for the safety of the next person who tries (thank you, Courage Wolf).
Shit like this is why getting out of the fucking bed every day is a political statement. Going out in public and getting on with your life and wearing a smile when you are utterly fucking miserable is a plane skywriting FUCK YOU in the face of bigots worldwide. It’s all the more reason why Pride celebrations are important. And why you should be yourself even when everybody wishes you were someone else.
